Betty Marie Byer

Betty Marie Byer, age 87, of Tyler, Minnesota, died on Friday, January 4, 2019, at the Avera Tyler Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Interment will follow in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Marshall. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. A rosary will begin at 4:00 p.m. and a prayer service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service, from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday at the church.

Betty Marie Unger was born on October 31, 1931, in Worthington, Minnesota, to Fred and Bessie (Helms) Unger. She received her schooling in Burchard, Minnesota, and grew up in the Russell area. After school, Betty worked various jobs.

On November 8, 1950, Betty was married to Wilfred Byer at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent, Minnesota. They made their home on the farm all their life, living in Lyon and Lincoln counties. Betty worked right alongside Wilfred in the fields and the barns. She especially enjoyed caring for the small animals along with her pal, their farm dog, Toby. Betty and Wilfred shared over 68 years of marriage together and raised 4 children. She was a devoted mother and homemaker who loved her children and grandchildren.

Betty was once a 4-H leader and helped organize a Walk-A-Line Extension Club. She did volunteer work for years and was a member of the St. Dionysius CCW. She was a current member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Betty’s enjoyments in life included dancing to old-time music, gardening, flowers, and crafts. She collected snow figurines, crocheted dolls and afghans, and made many quilts for her family. She was a collector of family photos, liked scrapbooking, and loved a good recipe. Betty was a great cook, she made many special foods and goodies for family, most notably her caramel rolls. She shared her talents by doing wedding and graduation cakes.

Betty Marie Byer died in Tyler, Minnesota, on Friday, January 4, 2019. She had reached the age of 87 years, 2 months, and 4 days. Blessed and eternal be her memory.

Betty is survived by her loving husband, Wilfred Byer of Tyler; 4 children, Philip Byer of Tyler, Geraldine (Joe) Citterman of Chanhassen, Jerome Byer (Wanda Thomas) of Arco, Linda (Greg) Goodmund of Russell; 9 grandchildren, Stacy Dresser of Arvada, CO, Kristin (Nate) Riess of Blaine, Jennifer (Josh) Moen of Thorton, CO, Michelle Citterman of Chanhassen, Jason Byer (Jennifer Stulken) of Arco, Lisa (Mark) Pederson of Hendricks, Darcy Byer (Aaron Beek) of Balaton, Terry (Kenzie) Goodmund of Balaton, Casey Goodmund (Nick Heitkamp) of Sioux Falls, SD; 13 great-grandchildren, Brianna Dresser, Hunter Dresser, Niklas Dresser, Charlie Dresser, Sienna Moen, Zoe Moen, Logan Riess, Emma Riess, Colton Byer, Easton Pederson, Brielle Pederson, Alexa Goodmund, Stella Goodmund; other relatives and many friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Bessie Unger; brother, Walter (Jane) Unger; and daughter-in-law, Carol Byer.
