Dorothy Ann Ahmann

November 9, 1921 — January 19, 2013

Marshall: Dorothy A. Ahmann, age 91, of Marshall, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Minneota Manor. Memorial service will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 1st at Christ United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Dorothy Ann Ahmann was born November 9, 1921, in Hinckley, MN to Bertha (Hausmann) and Earl Jefferson. The family later moved to Marshall, MN where Dorothy demonstrated her musical and academic prowess as first-chair clarinet in band and, like her sister before her and her sister after, valedictorian for her graduating class.
Dorothy (DoAnn to her close friends) married Lee Ahmann on November 30, 1945, in Watertown, SD; the couple had sons Dave and Jim and began their life in earnest. Always in attendance at the boys’ events and actively involved in their community, the Ahmanns also combined Turk’s brawn and Dorothy’s brains to successfully manage Murphy Motor Freight Lines from their Marshall home for many years.
What many remember most about Dorothy, however, is how often she was spotted on one of her daily walks. Averaging 10 miles a day, this tall, stately, white-haired woman graced the sidewalks of Marshall and the hallways of Park Side or SMSU. With her straight posture – the result of a broken back from a horseback-riding accident – and her “dressed to the nines” appearance, Dorothy left a lasting impression.
A voracious reader, Dorothy also enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing bridge, and volunteering for her Presbyterian church. She was a staunch defender of education, even insisting her boys take dance lessons when they were young; anyone who knows Dave and Jim knows how successful that was! A keen business mind, a fantastic cook, an ability to say what was on her mind…Dorothy Ahmann was definitely one-of-a-kind. Yet it was Dorothy’s role as Grandma that she cherished most. Pictures of Martie, Kellie, Ellie, and Tommy that still adorn the refrigerator show how proud she was of her grandchildren. Visits to Grandma and Grandpa’s house were never complete until the candy drawer was emptied.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters Arloine Stearns and Betty Olson. She is survived by her husband Turk of Marshall, her sons Dave (Sue) and Jim (Deb), and her grandchildren, all of whom reside in Arizona.
The family would like to thank the Minneota Manor staff for their compassionate care as Alzheimer’s clouded Dorothy’s mind in her last years.
Blessed be her memory.
