Duane Herrick, age 71, of Lynd, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a 7:30 P.M. prayer Service at the Hamilton Funeral Home on Friday, May 29. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.
Duane Dale Herrick was born on November 15, 1937 in Flandreau, South Dakota. His parents were Dale and Katherine (Thompson) Herrick. He was married to Bonnie Dickman in 1957 in Sioux Falls. Two sons, Dick and Dan, were born to this union. Becky was later adopted. He was married to Eunice Halling on July 18, 1970 at the St. Dionysius Church in Tyler, Minnesota. Two sons, Scott and Curtis, were born to this union.
He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1955 and went on to serve in the U.S. Marine reserves. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. After his employment as a night supervisor at the computer center in Morrell’s in Sioux Falls, he was employed as director of Computer Services at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, from 1967 through 1997. He also served on the Lynd Public School Board and Lynd Township Board for many years. He was a member of the Rawhide Rovers RV Club.
He enjoyed his employment at SMSU and the many friendships gained there. He was a very industrious, inventive, and creative man who loved to fix things. He liked country life and enjoyed raising Red Angus cattle for years. He enjoyed visiting with people, dancing, hunting, fishing, and auctions. He will be remembered for his friendliness, smile, humor, hearty laugh, and entertaining stories. He loved spending time with his grandson Henry, who liked to share his latest antics, drawings, and liked to talk about Grandpa’s dog, Buddy. We will miss him immensely.
Duane passed away on May 26, 2009, at the Sanford Hospital after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He had reached the age of 71 years, 6 months, and 11 days.
Duane in survived by his wife, Eunice of Lynd; five children, Scott Herrick of St. Paul, Curtis (and Molly) Herrick of Marshall, Dan Herrick of Marshall, Dick (and Karen) Herrick of Russell, and Becky Herrick of Missouri; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; brother, David (and Gwen) Herrick of Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Diane (and Ralph) Myers of Easley, SC; and aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Katherine.
