Marshall: Gerald J. Hughes, age 76, of Marshall, formerly of the Danvers area, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 29th at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a 4:00 P.M. Rosary and 7:00 P.M. prayer service Monday at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Visitation will continue at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service. Military Honors will be furnished by American Legion Post 113 and burial will be in Church of the Visitation cemetery in Danvers.
Jerry was born on August 18, 1937, in Benson, Minnesota, to parents Daniel Patrick and Loretta (O’Connor) Hughes. He was baptized, received First Communion, and was confirmed at the Church of the Visitation in Danvers. In 1957, Jerry entered the United States Army, and he was a member of the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” until his honorable discharge in 1959.
Jerry was united in marriage to Ardys Harguth on July 1, 1961, at St. Clara Catholic Church, in Clara City. He was employed in various jobs including: running the family farm near Danvers, a mechanic with Marshal Chevrolet, a dryer operator with Marshall Produce for 23 years, and a custodian for Boerboom International. Jerry retired in 1994.
The loves of his life were his wife and family. His enjoyments included reading Westerns, watching John Wayne movies, listening to Johnny Cash music, telling jokes, visiting with friends, and “drive abouts” with whomever would take him.
Jerry was a faithful member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and after his health declined he watched Mass on TV three times a day.
Jerry is dearly loved, and he will be greatly missed by his wife, Ardys of Marshall; children, Michelle (and Rick) Gordon of Iowa, Curtis (and Justyne) Hughes of Maryland, Shawn (and Michele) Hughes of North Carolina, Shannon Davis of Kansas, Francine (and Bill) Stahl of Marshall, Courtney (and Angie) Hughes of Marshall, Mana Rae Hughes of Marshall, and beloved pet, Okie; grandchildren, Shonn (Lisa), Bobbi Jo (Bryan), Katie, Andrew, Keely, Brittany (Bryan), Tyler, Courtney “C.J.”, Ashton, Nathan, Hunter, Kala, Morgan, Jackson, Zachary, Daniel, Jacob, Wyatt, Matthew, and Thomas; great-grandchildren, Corbyn, Corrine, Jersey, Christian, EthanLee, Trystin, Caelyn, and Raleigh; special child, Jessica (Christensen) Guetter; sisters, Loretta Dineen and Katherine “Kitty” Erhardt of Benson; Charlie and Betty Harguth, Sandra and Jon Rothers, Gary and Elaine Harguth, Millie Koenen; also many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, D.P. and Loretta; brothers, Daniel, Eugene, Frank, David, Thomas, Charlie; sister, Judy Megaw; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Art and Sharon Harguth; and brother-in-law, Donnie Koenen.
