Gilma Christine Syverson

Gilma C. Syverson, age 103, of Marshall, formerly of Willmar, passed away Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Hospice House in Marshall. A Celebration of Life service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 12, 2010, at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. Burial will be in Long Lake Cemetery near St James. Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a 6:30 P.M. prayer service Thursday at the Hamilton Funeral Home. Condolences may be submitted at www.hamiltonfh.com.
Gilma Christine Syverson was born to Ingevold and Serena (Juvurd) Oppegard on March 24, 1906 in Rice County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at the Solar Lutheran Church near Northfield. She graduated from the Northfield High School in 1924 and went on to attend the Minneapolis Business School.
On June 28, 1926, Gilma was united in marriage to Myron S. Syverson in Northfield. They lived in Orsmby, moving to New Ulm in 1951, then Morris, then Marshall and to Willmar in 1961. Myron passed away in 1985. Gilma moved to Marshall in 1997.
Gilma passed away at the Hospice House in Marshall on Friday, February 5, 2010. She had reached the age of 103 years 10 months and 9 days.
She is survived by four children, JoEllen Blomme of Marshall, Kent (Jan) Syverson of East Dubuque, IL, Gene (Marilyn) Syverson of Detroit, MI and Karen McDaniels of Annadale, VA; 25 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; also many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Myron; four sisters; two brothers; two sons, James and Maurice Syverson; two daughters, Patricia Breckenridge and Barbara Grein; and grandson, Kelly LacQuay.
Gilma’s enjoyments in life were quilting, reading about history, sewing (especially embroidering), flower gardening, playing the harmonica, and writing poetry.
Gilma was a faithful member of the First Lutheran Church in Marshall where she quilted and was a member of the Ladies’ Circle for many years.
