Harvey LeRoy Buchholtz was born on August 14, 1936, in Altamont, South Dakota. He was the son of Frank and Frieda (Weiber) Buchholtz. Harvey attended Marshall High School and graduated with the class of 1954.

Ever since Harvey was a young boy, he had an extraordinary work ethic. He started his career in 1953, before graduation, where he worked for Wieske-Smith Concrete until 1961. Shortly after, he started working for Deutz and Crow Concrete. In 1965, Harvey moved to Colorado for a year and worked for Colorado Southridge Homes. He moved back to the Marshall area in 1966 and continued to work for Deutz and Crow Concrete. In 1971, Harvey began his own business venture, Buchholtz Construction. During his years as a businessman, he was known as a perfectionist. His hard exterior, but soft heart made him a great boss. He loved his employees but expected them to give him their best. Some projects around the Marshall area he completed, include accomplishing the concrete work at Schwan’s after a fire had devastated their building in February of 1974 and helping pour the concrete for Southwest State University, now known as Southwest Minnesota State University. In 2006, he decided to retire. Even after retirement, the hard-working Harvey could not stop doing what he loved. He would often cruise around checking out all the new developments in the Marshall area. Local businesses enjoyed when he would stop and chit-chat with them.

On May 8, 1971, at First Lutheran Church in Marshall, Harvey was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sharon Evon Pearcy Horne. He found great joy in the family life. Harvey’s hard-working tendencies and life skills he discovered while working continued into his family life. He was the perfect combination of stern but loving. Harvey was referred to as the family rock and helped hold everyone together. Through the hardship of losing a son, and later his wife, he was still the glue that held everyone together. Harvey was there for his children no matter what the problem be. He was the Jack of all Trades and could help with any issues that arose. Harvey had many nicknames, he was known around the area as “Buck”, and to his grandchildren, he was lovingly referred to as “Papa,” “Bepa,” and “Beeps.” Later, when he gained the title of “Great-Grandpa,” he would also gain a new nickname, “Be-Bepa.”

Harvey also had many other interests in retirement. He took great pride in his house and yard and could be found tending to his home and landscaping. Harvey’s favorite pastime was spending time with family camping and going on boat rides. Harvey also enjoyed toodling on the golf cart, having the occasional Grain Belt beer, old country music, doing puzzles and having coffee with his friend Loretta.

Harvey died on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Prairie Home Hospice, Lockwood House in Marshall. He reached the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 17 days. Blessed be his memory.
