Lawrence August Filter Sr. was born in Winnetoon, Nebraska, on July 10, 1928, to Ewald and Agnes (Zerr) Filter. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. Larry attended Tracy Country Grade School and helped out on a neighbor’s farm alongside his dad. When he was 18, he enlisted in the Army and served in the Korean War. He was immensely proud to serve his country.

After returning from the Army, Larry met the love of his life, Blanche Garrow, through mutual friends. They were married on April 4, 1952, at the Justice of the Peace in Marshall. While the couple moved around a lot, they finally made their home in Marshall and raised their family.

Larry worked for Franks Welding as a welder, and eventually became a welder at Becker Iron and Metal. While Larry was a hard worker, he was also lovingly referred to as a “jokester” with a mischievous grin that would often giveaway that he was up to no good. Larry never met a stranger and loved spending time with his family and many friends. He also enjoyed having a drink and dancing, playing horseshoes and cards, fishing, and tending to his flower and vegetable gardens. He was a member of the American Legion Post 113 and a regular at the Garvin Bar.

Larry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Blanche Filter of Minneota; children, Bonita (Mark) Meyer of Alexandria, Lawrence (Michelle) Filter of Fulda, Lee Ann (Tony Theisen) Buysse of Marshall, Douglas (Kemper Albert) Filter of St. Louis Park, Hope (Jesse) Christianson of Ghent; 22 grandchildren, Jonathan Filter, Joey Filter, Steven (Jenny) St. Aubin Jr., Travis (Amy) St. Aubin, Jamie Hurley, Ryan (Sheena) St. Aubin, Hilary Buchert (Wade), Andrea Babcock (Corey), Corey (Mandy) Danderrand, Nathanial (Audrey) Filter, Ashley Madrigal, Jalen Madrigal (Lee Washington), Phillip Madrigal, Angie Maggsruckes (Eric), Chelsey Madrigal, Joshua (Kelli) Buysse, Melissa (Kevin) DeBaere, Heather (Walker) Werpy, Ashley (Byron) Vierk, Aubrie (Timmy) Bendtsen, Caitlyn (Scott) Martin, Samuel Albert, Desirae (Zach Bump) Filter, Marissa Christianson; 23 great-grandchildren; siblings, Alice Trebesch of Springfield, Charles “Chuck” Filter of Tracy, Delores Fredericks of Tracy; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
