Mildred May Kline was born October 6, 1926 to Mildred & Oliver Pierce in Audobon County, Iowa. Like so many of “The Greatest Generation,” Mildred lived a life which appreciated the value of hard work and the importance of family.
Married to Calvin Kline on January 2, 1946, the couple spent their first years of marriage farming in Iowa near their parents until moving to Ottumwa in 1956. Calvin’s job later had them moving to Marshall, MN where they would raise their family of three children, Joan, Janice, and Jeff. While Mildred stayed busy helping Calvin with his house building and craft projects, she still found time to work several part-time positions at Younkers, Penney’s, and in the school system at East Side Elementary School and Marshall Middle School. During her nearly 20 years at Marshall Middle School as a science clerical aide she developed many friendships which lasted years beyond her retirement in 1988.
Mildred and Calvin loved to travel, and each summer saw them off with the family in their tent and later their fifth wheel exploring the country, eventually making their way through most of the states. Once they had both retired, Calvin and Mildred began spending their winter months with Janice and her children in Phoenix, AZ and were able to spend time with their friends who also traveled to Arizona for the warmer weather.
When not working, traveling, and caring for her children, Mildred spent much of her time crafting, sewing, volunteering, and playing cards with friends. Most of all, she loved to bake with so many of her friends and family tasting her treats throughout the years.
Mildred is survived by her children Joan Chadwick of Sioux Falls, Janice Baltzer of Phoenix, and Jeff and wife, Donna, of St Louis; grandchildren Ryan Chadwick and wife Jana, Matthew Baltzer, Lindsay Baltzer, Jessie Kline, Annie Kline, and Claire Kline; great-grandchildren Elizabeth Chadwick and Natalie Chadwick.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Calvin; brother, Kenneth; and sisters, Beulah and Betty.
