Melvin “Corky” Douglas Madden was born on June 10, 1934, to parents Leo and Phoebe (Duvall) Madden in Tracy, Minnesota. He grew up in Lynd, Minnesota, and was baptized there as an infant and confirmed in his youth. Corky attended school in Lynd until an accident caused him to start losing much of his eyesight and he finished his schooling at Faribault at a specialized school for the vision impaired.
On June 17, 1956, Corky was united in marriage to Rose Dawn Tucker at the Albright Methodist Church in Marshall. The couple made their home in Lynd and spent the next 65 years creating a life around family, friends, and community. Corky was well known for his convenience store where the sounds of Buck Euchre games and kids buying a pop and candy bar were commonplace. After hours he enjoyed working in carpentry and helping others build various shelters and houses around town.
Corky served on the Lynd City Council and was known by many to be the primary source of town history and he had many stories to tell. He was stern and told it like it was, but also had a good sense of humor. Corky was meticulous in his approach to everything that he tackled and had a great memory for all of his tools and his many projects. This became vital as his sight began to deteriorate further. While Corky seemed to always be working and busy, he did find time to enjoy a game of Pinochle or take his kids fishing.
