Richard Edward Richards was born on November 23, 1938, in Minneota, Minnesota. He was the son of Elmo and Emilie (Verschelde) Richards. Dick grew up in Minneota where he was baptized, received his first communion, and was confirmed at St. Edward Catholic Church. He attended school in Minneota through the 8th grade and then attended Clarkfield High School where he graduated with the class of 1956. Dick immediately found work pumping gas at the PrairiePride Co-op station in Marshall.

On June 25, 1960, Dick was united in marriage to Deloris Christensen at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. The couple made their home in town until 1970 before moving to their current farm just outside of Marshall. They raised two sons and spent over 65 years of marriage together.

Dick spent nearly 60 years at the Co-op working in nearly every role, finishing his career as a bookkeeper prior to his retirement in 2019. Dick and Deloris were active with the Lyon County fair board, managed quarter horse shows in Windom where they were awarded top honors and were inducted into the Minnesota Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame. The couple was also active in the Saddle Club and participated with the Southwest Trail Riders. Dick truly had a passion for horses but also enjoyed cattle and hunting pheasants when time allowed.
