Kurt Charles Lonien was born on August 31, 1982, to Charles and Jean (Olberding) Lonien in Rochester, Minnesota. As an infant, he was baptized at Pax Christi Church in Rochester.  At the age of 4, Kurt and his family relocated to Vesta, Minnesota for a few years before planting their roots in Marshall, Minnesota. Kurt was confirmed at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and attended Holy Redeemer Catholic School before graduating with the Marshall High School Class of 2000.  Shortly after graduating high school, Kurt joined the United States Air Force. He served his country for 19 years as a Cryptologic Linguist (Arabic) and lived in a multitude of communities, including: Minnesota, Georgia, England, and Maryland. In the later years of his Air Force Career, Kurt used his love of helping by becoming a mentor to the many Airmen entering the field.

On August 15, 2003, Kurt was united in marriage to Christina Royster in Monterey, California. To this union, two boys were born: Aidan and Adler. These two boys were Kurt's pride and joy. He loved them dearly.

Music was very important to Kurt. He learned how to play the drums while in high school and decided to start a band with 3 of his friends, which they named "Stumps for Hands". He also enjoyed playing video games, board games, watching anime, and cheering for his favorite Minnesota Sport Teams.

Kurt was a very generous individual with a heart of gold. He loved his family, he loved serving his country, and had a deeply rooted commitment to making a difference. However, Kurt struggled with his mental health and alcohol addiction. We watched this disease take and take, until it eventually took Kurt's life. The pain of his death is something no family should ever have to go through. Please, if you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, reach out for help to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration at samhsa.gov or call 988.

Kurt Charles Lonien died on Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Avera Morningside Heights Care Center as a result of his long battle with alcoholism. He had reached the age of 40 years, 9 months, and 16 days. Blessed be his memory.
