Marie Sorine Berg Schmahl

Marie Berg Schmahl, age 96, of Crawford, Nebraska, and formerly of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Ponderosa Villa Nursing Facility in Crawford. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023, at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. Interment will be in the Marshall Cemetery, followed by a reception for attendees back at the church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to her celebration, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, also at the church.

Marie Sorine Hansen was born June 16, 1927, to Peter and Mary (Hagensen) Hansen in Tyler, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Danebod Lutheran Church and graduated from Tyler High School in 1945. Marie attended Rogers and Benner Beauty School in Minneapolis, and after graduation she started working in salons in Marshall and Pipestone, Minnesota. In 1958 Marie opened “Marie’s Beauty” in Marshall where she fixed hair for over 50 years until retiring in 1999.

Marie and Carrol Berg were married in 1950 at Danebod Lutheran Church in Tyler, Minnesota, and the couple had four children: Clark, Peter, Cheryl, and Paul. After Carrols death in 1972 she devoted time to her children, family, friends, church, community, and her business. In 1987 she married Hans Schmahl at First English Lutheran Church in Marshall where she was a church member until her death. In 2021 due to health needs Marie relocated to Crawford, Nebraska, which allowed her to be near her daughter Cheryl and family.

Marie was passionate about life and involved in her church where she volunteered a great deal of time to church organizations, creating flower arrangements, teaching Sunday School and attending bible study.  Marie gave of her time to the V.F.W, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a passionate cook and gardener, loved singing and playing her violin, doing crafts and playing word games. Marie made everyone welcome in her home from young to old with coffee, cookies, a meal or just a place to sit down and unwind.

Marie Berg Schmahl passed away on September 28, 2023, after a life well lived. She had reached the age of 96 years, 3 months, and 12 days. May her memory be forever blessed. 

She is survived by her children Peter (Peg) Berg, Cheryl (Mike) Witt, Paul Berg; daughter-in-law, Peggy Berg; stepdaughter, Shirlene (Dan) Schwab; grandchildren, Cody (Vicky) Berg, Joshua Berg, Teresa (CJ) Froman, Steven (Justa) Witt, Anna Berg, Gunnar Berg, Abby Berg, Kellen Berg; stepgrandchildren, Stephanie Condon, Melissa Schwab, Helen Idzorak, Kate Idzorak; along with many precious great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mary Hansen; husbands, Carrol Berg & Hans Schmahl; son, Clark Berg, stepson, David Schmahl; brothers, Jens Hansen, Delno Hansen; brother-in-law, Arnold Thomsen; sister, Merna Thomsen; and a cousin, Clyde Larsen.
