Philip Harvid Swanson

April 18, 1937 — February 28, 2018

Phil Swanson, age 80, of Marshall, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at the Minneota Manor Care Center. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2018, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Marshall. Following a reception, interment will be in the Russell Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2018, at the Hamilton Funeral Home in Marshall. A prayer service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Monday at the church.

Philip Harvid Swanson was born on April 18, 1937, in Marshall, Minnesota, to Joseph and Mae (Walkup) Swanson. He grew up on the family farm near Lynd and attended school there. After the 8th grade, Phil began farming with his parents. Phil was also active in the National Guards.

On April 27, 1962, Phil was united in marriage to Ann Gruneich at Wesley United Methodist Church in Marshall. The couple made their home and farmed in Lynd Township while raising 3 children, Larry, Brenda, and Bonnie. Phil retired in 2001 and then moved into Marshall. He and Ann shared nearly 40 years of marriage before Ann died in 2002.

On May 6, 2007, Phil was united in marriage to Susan (Keller) Algood at Albright United Methodist Church in Marshall. The couple lived in Marshall and, along with a wife, Phil gained 2 step-children, Traci and Angie.

Phil was a member at First Lutheran Church, Albright United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee, and then Wesley United Methodist Church where he enjoyed bible study. Phil was instrumental in the Thursday Corn and Bean Meetings held at the Silver Dollar in Ghent. His insights will be missed.

Phil was a social person who loved people, laughter, and he had a gift of being able to talk to anyone. He loved taking friends and family out to dinner. His other enjoyments included collecting toy tractors and trucks, playing cards, country and bluegrass music, and watching “Gunsmoke” and “Hee Haw” on TV.

Phil passed away on February 28, 2018, at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 10 days. He will be dearly missed.

Phil is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Sue Swanson of Marshall; 3 children, Larry (and Donna) Swanson of Marshall, Brenda (and Tom) Karner of Eagan, MN, Bonnie (and Dan) Wersal of Willmar, MN; 2 step-children, Traci (and Clayton) Moore of Mt. Vernon, SD, Angie Algood of Marshall; 5 grandchildren, Travis (and Mary) Swanson of Marshall, Jesse (and Jennifer) Swanson of John’s Island, SC, Chad (and Heidi) Swanson of Marshall, Amber Meredith of Marshall, Anthony Victor of Balaton; 2 step-grandchildren, Trayton Moore, Jalyn Moore; 6 great-grandchildren, Payton Swanson, Brock Swanson, Kalli Swanson, Rocco Swanson, Austin Swanson, Jenna Sanders; 6 brothers- and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mae Swanson; first wife, Ann Swanson; and 2 brothers, Joseph (Bev) Swanson, and Clarence (Arlys) Swanson. Blessed be his memory.
