Virgel Wayne Munsinger was born on December 6, 1933, in Slayton, Minnesota. He was the son of Charles and Iva (Lee) Munsinger. Virgel grew up near Lake Wilson, Minnesota, where he graduated with the high school class of 1953. He then moved to a farm northwest of Russell where he worked for several years before being drafted into the United States Army in 1958. After some time training in Colorado, he served primarily in Germany where he met the love of his life, Vera Grossman.
Virgel and Vera were married in Germany in 1960 and upon his discharge from the army in 1961, the couple returned to the United States and settled in Nebraska. Virgel found work testing with a geological driller and worked his way up in that company. He worked over 35 years and traveled all over the United States before he retired as a supervisor in 1995. The couple enjoyed another 20 years together in retirement where they did extensive traveling to Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Italy. Vera died in Omaha, Nebraska, in 2016 after 56 years of marriage.
Virgel then moved back to live with his brother in Balaton, Minnesota, and when he needed more help with his daily care, Virgel entered the Veteran's Home in Luverne, Minnesota, where he spent the last several years.
Virgel and his family worked through many tough farming days and that translated into his love of old western and cowboy movies. He naturally took to the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially trips to Montana. In whatever spare time was left, Virgel could often be found tinkering with cars.
Virgel died peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2025. He reached the age of 91 years, 4 months, and 29 days. Blessed be his memory.
He is survived by his brother, Clifton Munsinger of Balaton, and several nieces and nephews. Virgel was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Eva Munsinger; wife, Vera Munsinger; sister, Ruth Strom; brothers, Vincent Munsinger, Charles Munsinger; grand-niece, Darla Munsinger; and a grand-nephew, Douglas Munsinger.
